IELTS | Test Takers - General Training Writing sample

The General Training Writing test is 60 minutes long. It has two writing tasks of 150 words and 250 words. Below are samples of Task 1 and Task 2. (Note that candidates for the General Training module do a different Writing test to the Academic module).

Writing Task 1
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You rent a house through an agency. The heating system has stopped working. You phoned the agency a week ago but it has still not been repaired.

Write a letter to the agency. In your letter

1.  introduce yourself
2.  explain the situation
3.  say what action you would like the agency to take

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear.......................,

Writing Task 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some businesses now say that no one can smoke cigarettes in any of their offices. Some governments have banned smoking in all public places. This is a good idea but it takes away some of our freedom.

Do you agree or disagree?

Write at least 250 words.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
