NAFSA Presents Prestigious International Education Awards at 2010 Annual Conference

Release date: 29 June 2010

The Cassandra Pyle Award for Leadership and Collaboration in International Educational Exchange honors the contributions of a senior international educator to global international exchange. This year’s awardee, Dr. Zuhair A.G. Humadi, is a high-ranking official in the Iraqi government and a respected international educator. He is a steadfast advocate for education as the bedrock of the future of Iraq. He serves as co-chairman of the Iraqi Fulbright Commission, senior advisor to Iraqi Vice President Adel Abdel-Mahdi, and as an advisor to Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. As executive director of Iraq's Higher Committee for Education Development, Dr. Humadi has been the driving force behind the Iraq Education Initiative, a program that aims to rebuild Iraq’s higher-education system by providing scholarships at foreign universities for students who will later return to Iraq and take part in the revitalization of the country. More than 500 Iraqi students are expected on campuses in the United States and Britain this year as part of this program, and thousands more will also study in Canada and Australia in the coming years.
