Why study in Australia?

Release date: 09 Apr 2010

Australia’s universities and educational institutions offer a great opportunity for international students to gain a high quality, internationally recognised qualification in a country known for its great lifestyle.

Whether you choose to study in Australia on a student visa or complete an Australian course by correspondence, you will receive an investment in your future and memorable life experiences.

Get a quality education
Australia has 39 universities and many other Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) offering quality courses with an international reputation for excellence. Australian teachers and academics are fully qualified and Australian graduates find rewarding work all around the globe.

The Australian Qualifications Framework maps out the different levels of Australian courses – from basic Certificates to Bachelor’s Degrees to Doctorate Degrees – most of which have equivalent course levels in other countries. You can start at the level which corresponds with your personal and professional goals, and move up the ladder.
A great place to live
Choosing to study in Australia means living in a beautiful and diverse country with an unsurpassed lifestyle, great weather and friendly people. It’s an extremely multicultural nation, made up of people from all around the world, which will make your transition easier.

There are many opportunities to travel and explore this great land – Oz is known for its beautiful beaches, clean cities, gorgeous landscapes and fascinating Outback.

You can be assured of an affordable cost of living – Australia has lower living and study costs than the USA or UK.

International students can also feel secure about their personal and financial safety in a nation with low crime rates.

Work while you study
As an international student in Australia you can supplement your income and boost your CV by working and studying at the same time. During semester you can work up to 20 hours a week, and during vacation full-time work is permitted. This international work experience will be invaluable to you and impress potential employers wherever you are.

Lots of student support
Australian universities offer plenty of support to their students. Orientation days will help you settle in to your new life, and when you need help, English language support and counselling on academic or personal issues is available. The university can also provide assistance in finding you accommodation or a job.

Due to the high numbers of overseas students in Australia, international student associations are large and powerful. They are there to protect your rights, offer advice and, of course, to help you meet other international students for memorable social occasions!

The world at your doorstep
In 2008 there were more than 200 000 international students in Australia. They come from all over the globe – so you will be able to make friends from back home easily, as well as share experiences with students from many other countries who you would otherwise never get the chance to meet.

Most international students in Australia are from China, India, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.

There are also many students from the US, Canada, the UK, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, the Philippines, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Mauritius and Zimbabwe.

Study by distance
An alternative to studying in Australia is to study an Australian qualification online or by distance. You will be able to receive your study documents by email or post and submit your assignments in a similar way. All interaction with teachers and other students will be via the Internet, and you will have plenty of student and technical support available at all times.

Studying an Australian course by distance will provide you with exactly the same qualification as coming to Australia in person to study.
