Fees

New Zealand education is world-class but very cost competitive compared to other countries. Talk to your institution about their fees and preferred methods of payment.

Advance payments

  • You’ll need to pay fees in advance because proof of payment is required to get a student visa or permit. There is usually an application or administration fee, even if your application isn’t successful.

Methods of payment

You can pay your fees:

  • - through the institution's agent in your country
  • - by credit card – you give your credit card number on your application form but payment is not processed until your - enrolment is confirmed
  • - by funds transfer from your bank into the institution's bank account in New Zealand
  • - by bank draft or bank cheque in NZ$, posted to the institution.

.

Cancellation and refunds

  • If you cancel before the course starts, most or all of your fees will be refunded. This may apply if your visa is not granted or you are transferring to another institution. If you cancel in the first week or so of the course, only part of your fee will be refunded. Beyond the first week or two, you probably won't get any refund.

.

What your fees cover

  • Undergraduate study can cost about NZ$18,000–$25,000 a year, depending on your course. It can cost up to $40,000 a year for postgraduate courses. Your fees cover:

    • - Government Service Tax (GST)
    • - registration and enrolment
    • - student health and counselling
    • - language support
    • - use of most campus facilities.

Secondary school fees are generally around NZ$10,000 a year.
